Next time: Fried Chicken & Waffles

Would you wake up when it’s still dark outside to get fried chicken and sweet potato waffles?

Well…if it’s from Screen Door restaurant on East Burnside here in Portland, you should.

This daylight-savings’d Sunday morning, Hallie and I set our alarm clocks and endured a drive through the dreary Portland rain over to the East side in pursuit of brunch at the famous Southern comfort food capital of Oregon, Screen Door. Initially we had been informed the wait would be around thirty minutes, which translated to over an hour which was not too terrible considering we ended up bumming on an awning-shielded bench sipping on mugs of Stumptown and plotting out an agenda for our future dining endeavors (we’re looking at you LePigeon.)

By the time the hostess classically mispronounced my name to summon us to our table, our hearts were fluttering in anticipation over whether this place really was worth the hype or not. As always, I was absolutely torn to shreds as to what to order- the Eggs Sardou (Eggs benedict with creamed spinach & artichokes), the Mushroom Frittata, or the Roasted Vegetable Hash…there was also the Fried Chicken & Waffles (which I plan on having next time considering it was AFTER I placed my order that I saw the glorious buttermilk-battered protein mountain being delivered to our neighbouring table.)

However, Hallie and I were both more than pleased with the results of our orders:

Hallie’s bacon/mushroom/aged cheddar frittata with herb aioli, arugula, roasted potatoes, and wheat toast…talk about a massive plate of food…

Me: Roasted vegetable hash (cauliflower, carrots, celery, onions, green onions, pumpkin seeds, & golden potatoes with spicy red pepper sauce), poached eggs, and wheat toast.

I admit, I’ve never exactly had Southern Food- partially due to the prevalent use of ham/bacon/other pork products (I can’t eat pork), and partially due to my deep-fried/heavy cream/lots of butter phobias. However, I have to say that I will consider fried chicken and waffles or banana foster french toast on my next trip just because it all looked/smelled so damn good, and if there is a place to eat that stuff and know it’s the best quality- it’s probably right here.
